Chaplain Jonathan L. Black

Biography

Chaplain (Major) Jonathan Black and family have transitioned from USAF Active Duty to the Florida Air National Guard. Chaplain Black is in regular drill status at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL. He is assigned to the 101st Air & Space Operations Group. He also responds to Title 32 orders for natural disasters and other state requirements. Chaplain Black previously served at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, Germany, as an embedded Unit Chaplain for the 4th Air Support Operations Group; providing ministry to Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) Special Warfare Airmen as well as ministering to Expeditionary Combat Weather Airmen. Chaplain Black traveled throughout Eastern Europe to TACP and Combat Weather Squadrons supporting U.S. Army, Air, and NATO land combat units. In all assignments, Chaplain Black provides preaching, teaching, Bible studies, ministry of presence, Christian literature distribution, confidential counseling, ethical and moral guidance, and spiritually enriching events for Airmen and their families.

Chaplain Black is a native of Waldorf, Maryland, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and first Chaplain Candidate Program inductee into the Rhode Island Army National Guard. After five years, Chaplain Black transferred to the Rhode Island Air National Guard in 2013, serving with the 143 rd Air Lift Wing “Rhode Warriors” out of Quonset Point, North Kingstown, R.I. Thereafter, the Lord gave Chaplain Black an opportunity to serve on Active Duty, starting at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas (2017-2020). There he ministered to aircraft maintainers, logistics readiness personnel, and families; he delivered sermons and provided counseling and leadership to the Protestant Chapel worship community. Chaplain Black next served in a remote, unaccompanied assignment in Incirlik, Turkey for thirteen months; experiencing a fruitful ministry of preaching, teaching, counseling, and discipleship.

Jonathan completed his Master of Arts in modern European history at Providence College (Rhode Island); his Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and, his Bachelor of Arts from Washington Bible College. Chaplain Black was ordained out of Grace Bible Church, Cranston, R.I.

Jonathan’s life and work experience are varied; he has served as both a solo Pastor and associate Pastor (elder) in two churches as well as teaching at a classical Christian school for seven years and teaching history at the College of Southern Maryland. Jonathan worked for 10 years as a hospice Chaplain; and, earlier in life, in federal law enforcement.

Jonathan and his wife Alaide (Brazilian) are raising two sons, Nathan and Ian. They are currently receiving a homeschooled education. Jonathan and Alaide enjoy the seaside and walking. Jonathan also enjoys reading and watching 1970’s cop shows; Alaide also enjoys sewing and traveling.

Chaplain Black’s endorsing agency is Associated Gospel Churches. The AGC has endorsed chaplains since 1939. RBNet is thankful for the willingness of AGC to enter into this cooperative agreement with RBNet.
