Alejandro (Alex) & Liya Torres
Biography
Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Alex came to know the Lord when he heard the gospel for the first time as a 19-year-old high school student. Since then, his love for the Lord, the gospel, and Godโs Word, have increased so much that he has followed Godโs calling to serve in the local church and in missions.
Beginning in 2021, Alex spent two years praying, visiting, and connecting with Iglesia Bautista de la Gracia (Grace Baptist Church) in Malaga, Spain. In 2022 during his last year of seminary, he met his wife, Liya.
Liya and her family fled Donetsk, Ukraine, in 2014 because of the Russo-Ukrainian War and eventually moved to Spain. The Lord converted Liya when she understood the gospel as a 15-year-old in Madrid. While living in Malaga, she met Alex at a conference in 2022. They got married in the summer of 2023. By Godโs grace they have two kids.
Alex graduated from The Masterโs Seminary (M.Div.) 2022. He was a member of the Reformed Baptist Church of Riverside, CA. At the recommendation of (RBCR), Alex was approved as an RBNet-endorsed missionary. During his final year of seminary and pastoral training with the Spanish-ministry, Alex also served as an interim pastorย and then and HeartCry commissioned Alex to Malaga, Spain in 2023.
They went to southern Spain with the desire to partner with Iglesia Bautista de la Gracia (Grace Baptist Church) in Malaga (25 members) and assist the team of pastors, preparing him to plant new churches in Spain. Alex continues to serve the church by teaching, discipling new believers, and pastoral visits. In addition, they initiated a Bible study with the young adult group and are teaching the 1689 London Baptist Confession. These studies serve as a means to build more fellowship and trust for this ministry and local church context with its members.
Southern Spain is mainly characterized by traditional Catholics, Muslims, Jehovahโs Witnesses, and very few evangelicals. It also has a new generation of atheism and secularism with little to no gospel witness, as there are very few sound doctrinal churches in the region. In a country with a population of more than 47 million people, fewer than 2.0% of evangelicals exist in the country. In 2023, the population in the Andalusia region of southern Spain was 8,600,224. Malaga is the second largest city in the Andalusia region.
The harvest is still plentiful and the workers are few. We need to pray more and plant more biblical churches.
